More Veep Smoke on the Water

August 14th, 2008 Here and There Posted in bayh, biden, election 2008, obama, obama's VP, politics, richardson, serious No Comments »

Reports that Biden and Bayh, along with Richardson, Jay Rockefeller, Reid, Salazar, Clyburn and Reps. Murphy and Duckworth, are set to speak Wednesday at the convention should be raising many eyebrows.

I wouldn’t rule out Biden for VP. Nor would I diminish Richardson’s star (though that may be due to favoritism on my part). Biden would be a great VP, in addition to kicking a lot of ass on the campaign trail. He’s got experience, some charisma, and balls of steel. Fact that he’s from Delaware doesn’t mean anything, and his fame is pretty perfect in contrast with Obama’s.

I refuse to comment on Bayh, and he’s consistently my least favorite among the buzzworthy.

My Obama VP Short List

June 10th, 2008 Here and There Posted in bloomberg, edwards, election 2008, hagel, napolitano, obama, politics, richardson, schweitzer, serious, webb No Comments »

In no particular order:

  • Bill Richardson
  • John Edwards
  • Chuck Hagel
  • Michael Bloomberg
  • Janet Napolitano
  • Jim Webb
  • Brian Schweitzer

Isn’t it nice not having to worry that the ticket will be too white? I know, I know, if Hillary had won, we wouldn’t have to worry about its being to male. Still, I’m just saying.

Obama Checklist Contains Suspiciously Missing ‘Done’ Item

May 15th, 2008 Here and There Posted in bill clinton, edwards, election 2008, hillary clinton, obama, politics, richardson, serious, superdelegates 1 Comment »

Richardson endorsement — check
Superdelegate lead — check
Turn toward general election strategy/campaigning — check
Edwards endorsement — check
Concession by Clinton — …

(This post in no way anticipates nor expects Hillary Clinton to concede. Ever. It merely wishes to illustrate the obvious — that the Democratic Party has a nominee, despite the disbelief/refusual to admit as much by one or two of its members.)

VP Deliberation

May 13th, 2008 Here and There Posted in election 2008, obama, obama's VP, richardson, serious No Comments »

God forbid Barack Obama should ask one of his fellow senators to join his ticket.

It’s striking me as more and more sensible to look to the West, to a governor of a battleground state. Janet Napolitano would make a wonderful VP, but she won’t carry Arizona for the Democrats. McCain has a lock on that state.

In terms of the nation being familiar with a candidate, Bill Richardson just seems obvious. I like him. He has executive and legislative experience, in addition to his much-touted foreign policy and diplomacy résumé.

Kathleen Sebelius would be solid, but faces an uphill battle in terms of recognition on the national stage. And, sorry, but I don’t think a African-American-and-female ticket is the way to go. Racism from now until November could reach new heights. Sexism inherent in putting a woman on the ticket won’t diffuse it, and may turn even more people off.

Finally, the Truth Is Reported

Because seriously, why would Hillary Clinton say Obama can’t win? Of course it was Bill Richardson who said it.

Richardson: In His Own Words

A nice op-ed by the New Mexico governor, recalling that the attacks against him are the very thing he (and Obama) campaign against.

Recent news said James Carville and his wife were leaving Washington. Good. Can they go away forever now?

Vice President Richardson

March 21st, 2008 Here and There Posted in election 2008, obama, politics, richardson, serious No Comments »

I’m over being annoyed at how long he waited to endorse, and am now determined to have this guy reclaim the dignity of the office (to use a perfectly Bushian phrase) of the Vice President. I’d love for him to be on the ticket, and the McCain desperados to try to talk about a lack of experience.

Bill Richardson Endorses Obama

March 21st, 2008 Here and There Posted in election 2008, obama, politics, richardson, serious No Comments »

Fucking finally!!!!

From an email I just received:

Bill Richardson for President
Dear Jeff,

During the last year, I have shared with you my vision and hopes for this nation as we look to repair the damage of the last seven years. And you have shared your support, your ideas and your encouragement to my campaign. We have been through a lot together and that is why I wanted to tell you that, after careful and thoughtful deliberation, I have made a decision to endorse Barack Obama for President.

We are blessed to have two great American leaders and great Democrats running for President. My affection and admiration for Hillary Clinton and President Bill Clinton will never waver. It is time, however, for Democrats to stop fighting amongst ourselves and to prepare for the tough fight we will face against John McCain in the fall. The 1990’s were a decade of peace and prosperity because of the competent and enlightened leadership of the Clinton administration, but it is now time for a new generation of leadership to lead America forward. Barack Obama will be a historic and a great President, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad.

Earlier this week, Senator Barack Obama gave an historic speech. that addressed the issue of race with the eloquence, sincerity, and optimism we have come to expect of him. He inspired us by reminding us of the awesome potential residing in our own responsibility. He asked us to rise above our racially divided past, and to seize the opportunity to carry forward the work of many patriots of all races, who struggled and died to bring us together.

As a Hispanic, I was particularly touched by his words. I have been troubled by the demonization of immigrants–specifically Hispanics– by too many in this country. Hate crimes against Hispanics are rising as a direct result and now, in tough economic times, people look for scapegoats and I fear that people will continue to exploit our racial differences–and place blame on others not like them . We all know the real culprit — the disastrous economic policies of the Bush Administration!

Senator Obama has started a discussion in this country long overdue and rejects the politics of pitting race against race. He understands clearly that only by bringing people together, only by bridging our differences can we all succeed together as Americans.

His words are those of a courageous, thoughtful and inspiring leader, who understands that a house divided against itself cannot stand. And, after nearly eight years of George W. Bush, we desperately need such a leader.

To reverse the disastrous policies of the last seven years, rebuild our economy, address the housing and mortgage crisis, bring our troops home from Iraq and restore America’s international standing, we need a President who can bring us together as a nation so we can confront our urgent challenges at home and abroad.

During the past year, I got to know Senator Obama as we campaigned against each other for the Presidency, and I felt a kinship with him because we both grew up between words, in a sense, living both abroad and here in America. In part because of these experiences, Barack and I share a deep sense of our nation’s special responsibilities in the world.

So, once again, thank you for all you have done for me and my campaign. I wanted to make sure you understood my reasons for my endorsement of Senator Obama. I know that you, no matter what your choice, will do so with the best interests of this nation, in your heart.

Sincerely,

Bill Richardson

Richardson on Obama: Great Judgment, Internationalist Background

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson slammed the Clinton 3 a.m. add and praised Obama. A quasi-endorsement?

The Endorsement Dance

February 16th, 2008 Here and There Posted in edwards, election 2008, gore, hillary clinton, obama, politics, richardson, serious No Comments »

The New York Times top story at the moment covers the trend of big-name Democrats’ refusal to endorse, and speculates that this phenomenon is due to party leaders not wanting mayhem at the convention.

I have to disagree with the premise here.

Now, given how things have played out so far, I put nothing past chance. But I really don’t see people like Nancy Pelosi, Al Gore, Bill Richardson, John Edwards, Barbara Boxer (and there are plenty of others) all splitting their votes. Were they to endorse, even now, it may just tip the scales one way or the other, thereby reducing the importance and need for superdelegates.

I’ve posted in recent days growing disgust with Clinton’s campaign tactics, but the truth is I would still prefer her to McCain. The Democrats need a candidate, not a tooth-and-nail, beat ‘em up fight to the finish.

Is no endorsement a no?

February 7th, 2008 Here and There Posted in edwards, election 2008, gore, politics, richardson, serious 1 Comment »

Here and There is still upset with people like John Edwards, Al Gore, Bill Richardson, and Barbara Boxer for failing to endorse a candidate. Of course, the way this race has shaped up, they’d probably end up splitting their endorsements down the middle.

But can they truly be torn between the two candidates? Can they all be playing it safe in order to curry favor with whoever the eventual nominee is? Especially for an out-of-office, ex-VP figure like Al Gore, whom some consider the head of the party, what’s the risk in endorsing?

This is the kind of thing I want to just give up on, but at the same time, I wake up every day wondering what the hell is going on. Kinda reminds me of the last seven years …

Super Tuesday Popular Vote Count

February 6th, 2008 Here and There Posted in edwards, election 2008, hillary clinton, obama, politics, richardson, serious 2 Comments »

Here’s a blog post from CNN, though they have Clinton’s total wrong. It should be:

  • Clinton 7,350,238 (50.18%)
  • Obama 7,295,400 (49.82%)

Wow. A difference of only 54,838 votes.

I’m starting to get pissed at John Edwards and Bill Richardson for not endorsing, btw.

With 92 percent of precincts reporting, here are the results:

  • Obama :: 63,011 :: 49% :: 12 delegates
  • Clinton :: 62,493 :: 48% :: 13 delegates

Curse on Bill Richardson for not endorsing! We need a candidate, dammit!
