  • Firefox 3 Favorite Feature

June 27th, 2008 Here and There Posted in design, firefox, internet/multimedia, serious No Comments »

    (A possibly recurring post)

Been running Firefox 3 since its June 17 release, and I’m pleased to report no significant glitches. Errors I have seen (two, I think) were corrected with a simple refresh.

Right now, one of my favorite features is how, when you’ve got enough open tabs that they crowd the tab bar and some are pushed “off screen” to the left or right, if you’ve got a trackpad that scrolls left and right, you can place your cursor over the tab bar and move left and right, bringing up the tabs that fell off.

It’s much more elegant than clicking a left or right arrow button, which, by the way, is still there.

    What Is iTunes, Really?

May 28th, 2008 Here and There Posted in apple inc., design, mac, music, random observations, serious, technology No Comments »

Just a quick odd thought: It struck me as puzzling and anachronistic yesterday that iTunes still uses a compact disc as part of its application icon. That’s all.

    Purple $5 Bills Out Today

March 13th, 2008 Here and There Posted in currency, design, serious No Comments »

God it’s nice to take a break from politics, though the theme of abomination still applies.

The new $5 bills will roll out today. Here’s a sneak peak:

Why Mike Gravel never gained traction

February 12th, 2008 Here and There Posted in design, election 2008, grammar, words + copy, gravel, obama, politics, ridiculous 3 Comments »

If you’ve ever watched a debate in which former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel was allowed to participate, you might be wondering, Why didn’t that nutjob go further in his bid for the Democratic nomination? You wouldn’t be off-base in pondering such a question.

But I think I’ve stumbled upon the answer: Gravel doesn’t know punctuation:

Compare that monstrously grotesque, backward apostrophe with this work of simple, accurate beauty:

… and maybe it’ll all start to make sense.

What’s this blog? I thought it was Here and There …

January 22nd, 2008 Here and There Posted in blog introspection, design, internet/multimedia, journalism, serious 2 Comments »

Hi. A word on the new look and feel of Here and There.

I decided sometime late last year to change the theme of this blog. After much shopping around on the WordPress themes page (keeping in mind my preference for the color orange), I settled on Limau Orange, built by Bob at Blog Oh! Blog.

What I liked about the theme, besides the color, is the fact that it feels like a blog. To me, it’s a little more obvious and easy to see what you’re here to read (assuming I even have people visiting the site anymore, and not visiting via RSS reader). I like the fonts and the way it lays the posts out directly in the middle of the page. Also, it doesn’t look so much like a newspaper anymore, and a big part of that is that I no longer work for a newspaper, but rather a news organization.

So, this is Here and There 3.0. Welcome. I’d love to hear what you think of it, love it or hate it.

The one guy who does it all

I know I’m not telling too many people something they didn’t already know, but many (if not most) American newspaper mastheads were designed by one person. His name is Jim Parkinson. And his work is phenomenal.
