It’s its birthday!

Hello. I’m Here and There, and today I turn two years old. Thanks for saying hi on my birthday, whether you knew it was my birthday or not.

As we blogs are wont to do, I’m using this space and time as an excuse to reflect. Today, I’m looking back on the last 730 days, strictly in terms of what has transpired here in this space.

First of all, we’ve come a long way layoutwise. I can’t find a screen shot (mostly cuz I’m a bad archiver), but thanks to the good people at Internet Archive and their Wayback Machine, I was able to recover a few choice old posts, mastheadless though they be.

Here’s something fun, I think: a list of brainstormed possible names for Here and There:

from the desk of
still can’t type right
rambling on…
anyone listening?
message in a bottle
lend me your ears
minds and manners
matters large and small
leave me alone
i was only dreaming
too young to be old
it doesn’t matter
pornalist
bonanza
banana tree
never bored
brain in a vat
meaningless acronyms
out there
here and there

Some basic reflections: There have been 513 posts in 65 categories, and a measly 281 comments (I blame myself, not you, dear reader). My average is one post every 1.42 days. Not bad. The blog has received something between 26,193 and 300,000 total page views in two years. I still haven’t found a totally reliable statistics tool. The search continues …

Around May 14, 2006, the old Here and There became the new Here and There, when I got my very own URL. It’s been nice not having to latch onto another site, cutting the digital apron strings as it were. I’ve done fairly well on my own, too, if I may say so myself.

Individual postwise, there have been a few standouts. Some of my faves include:

Hierarchy of soda forms
Can the people who aren’t going to win drop out already?
ish vs. esque
Spelling the Alphabet
My least favorite topics
First Gentleman?
The mystery of the yawn
25 Things I Like About the United States and 15 More things I like about the U.S., which contains the entire list.
You can’t be “one-third” anything
Pluto to remain roundish chunk of ice and rock
“i” think “I” disagree
The Hierarchy of Urban Mobility
“Herd” Mentality
The Busy Excuse
A parked car never pulls out

Thanks to a link from SF Gate, Why do we care about who has sex with whom? got one of the highest amounts of traffic of any Here and There post.
Another popular post, Luke and Leia and Mary Kate and Ashley, from back in 2005. Guess why?
June 8, 2007, saw the heaviest traffic in one day. The only post around that day was Lincoln’s pen. Weird because that individual post didn’t garner much attention.
The month of June 2007 saw the heaviest traffic by far. Approximately 20 percent higher than March 2007, the previous most trafficked month.

Anyway, that’s about all the blog self-indulgence I can handle. If you made it through this entire post, congratulations and thanks are in order. It’s been fun. That’s the summary. And there’s no end in sight.

    Happy birthday!

Thanks for being one of my first windows into What’s-his-name. Or…should that be a “fuck you”? No, I’ll stick with thanks.

Cheers to another year of success, HaT.
