No amendment for now
Not that I care or anything…
But our House of Representatives today voted not to (or should it be to?) amend the U.S. Constitution to ban marriage between homosexual people.
Maybe you saw that headline, too. In case you didn’t read the story, the vote was 236-187, 46 votes shy of the two-thirds needed to pass the bill to the Senate.
But wait. Two hundred thirty-six for? Only 187 against?!? Republicans currently outnumber Democrats 231 to 201, with one independent (a sad fact in and of itself) and two vacancies.
That means at least five Democrats voted for the amendment, and on the negative side, at least 14 did so. (If you know of a roll call on this bill HJ Res 88), please let me know.)
Wow. I can’t believe they’re that close to writing homophobia into the Constitution.
UPDATE: I found the roll call for this vote. Turns out 34 Dems voted in favor of the amendment. Let me rephrase that: 34 Democrats who are up for election this November voted in favor of amending the Constitution to ban homosexual marriage.
